Residents report bank phone scam

LANCASTER - The Vinton County National Bank is warning customers of phone scams reported over the last several days with residents being told their debit cards were locked.

The calls are reportedly being made from phone numbers around the world or may appear as unavailable on the caller ID. When Ohio residents have received the call, they are told their debit cards have been locked and the call directs them to a security department.

Bank Vice President of Marketing Audra Johnson is urging customers not to fall for the scam.

“People who bank with numerous different banks have reported receiving these phone calls,” Johnson said. “The caller doesn’t actually know where you bank or what bank products you have. They are simply trying to gain sensitive information. (Vinton County National Bank) has not experienced a security breach but when a customer provides personal information to a scammer they are putting themselves at risk.”

Vinton County owns the Friendly Bremen Banking Center.

Johnson said no financial institution would ask for personal information in a phone call or email. If any one does receive a call, do not provide any information and hang up.
