Brush fire damages garage

Staff report

PERRY TWP - A brush fire spread quickly Sunday afternoon and damaged a garage.

Hanover Township fire Chief Brian Spellman said the fire started at a residence in the 5100 block of Licking Valley Road after 2 p.m. and damaged a garage on a neighboring property.

"It made its way over the hillside to the neighbor's property, which is where it was when I arrived at the scene," Spellman said. "It scorched and ruined the vinyl siding on the back of the neighbor's garage."

Several area departments responded with tankers to provide support and fight the fire, which Spellman estimated traveled "probably one to two acres."

"It can get ugly quick, so we didn't want to get behind the 8-ball," said Spellman, who praised the quick work of everyone involved.

Spellman added he believes the fire began from the resident burning on his property. He warned of the danger of burning, especially on a windy day.
