FREMONT - A suspect in a Fremont bank robbery arrested in Toledo this week faces aggravated robbery charges after allegedly stealing money from Key Bank on Feb. 2.

John Hawkins, 47, no address given, was seen purchasing beard dye, latex gloves, eyeglasses, a realistic-looking BB gun, a stocking cap and spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide, a news release said.

In the release sent by Interim Fremont Police Chief Jim White, Hawkins was seen on surveillance buying those items at a local store while wearing the same clothing the robbery suspect was seen wearing at the Key Bank on Oak Harbor Road.

Hawkins is being held in Lucas County Jail on unrelated charges, White said. He was charged with unauthorized use a vehicle, nonsupport of dependents and theft.

"He was arrested in Toledo on unrelated charges Monday. Once those charges are cleared up, he will be sent here (to Sandusky County)," White said.

According to Fremont police, Hawkins is alleged to have approached the bank counter, motioned to his waist and told the clerk he had a gun. He then handed the clerk a note demanding money.

Detectives from multiple agencies reviewed surveillance footage and said they believe Hawkins robbed the bank to support a cocaine and heroin drug addiction.

Assisting Fremont police were Sandusky Federal Bureau of Investigation, Oregon Police Department and the Sandusky County and Ottawa County drug task forces.
