War of 1812, sailors remembered at Put-in-Bay

PUT-IN-BAY – American, Canadian and British officials came together to honor those who served in the Battle of Lake Erie and pay tribute to the Memorial Day holiday Monday on the steps of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial.

The Memorial Day ceremonies highlighted the importance of the War of 1812 and saluted the 557 sailors who served during the Battle of Lake Erie.

Representatives from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, National Park Service, Consulate General of Canada and the Lake Erie Heritage Foundation spoke about the Battle of Lake Erie bicentennial as well as the importance of the War of 1812 and the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war and was ratified in 1815.

Officials unveiled a permanent plaque to honor those who served and the 557 modern-day sailors, who stood in their place during the 2013 re-enactment of the Battle of Lake Erie.
