CHILLICOTHE - The Ross County Sheriff's Office reports a man is dead after deputies were called to Pleasant Valley Road on Tuesday.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies were called to the 12000 block of Pleasant Valley Road around 2:30 a.m. after an anonymous tip and found a 55-year-old man had been assaulted. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken by squad to Adena Regional Medical Center and later flown to Grant Medical Center.

Investigators received a call Thursday that the man had died at the hospital.

After an initial investigation, deputies arrested Matthew Z. Smith, 23, and charged him with felonious assault and aggravated burglary. The investigation was turned over to the Ross County Sheriff's Office Detective Division.

The identity of the victim has not been released because his family has not yet been notified, Lt. Mike Preston said.

The man's body is in the custody of the Franklin County Coroner's Office and an autopsy is expected Saturday, according to the sheriff's office.

The investigation is ongoing, Preston said, and no information on the man's injuries is available.
