Valley Grange 1586 meets

Valley Grange 1586 met Nov. 23 at Theo’s in Cambridge. Joe Gildea and Betty Murphy were delegates to the Ohio State Grange session in October and gave reports from the meeting. Faye Gray placed second in the state in the quilt contest and John LePage received the Ohio State Grange Outstanding Secretary Award.

Murphy asked for members to bring items to the December meeting for gift bags for residents of the county home. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, tissues, playing cards and other similar items are suggested.

Guest speaker was Kathy Werner of the Guernsey County Habitat for Humanity. The chapter has just finished its 16th home in the county. The next house is expected to start construction in the second half of 2016. The grange made a donation to the chapter.

The next meeting will be at noon Dec. 21 at Center United Methodist Church. Those attending should bring sides, salads and desserts for a potluck and a $5 uni-sex present for a gift exchange The grange will provide chicken, tableware and some beverages.

Upcoming Events

• Dinner hunter dinners will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday to Wednesday at Ark Spring Baptist Church. Baked steak will be served Monday and Wednesday with roast pork on Tuesday. Various homemade sides, salads and desserts will be available each evening.

• The Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District recycling trailer will available Tuesday and Wednesday at the Spencer Township Building on Mill Street. Availability is subject to change and the trailer is for recyclable materials only.

• A blood drive will be Friday at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For an appointment, call Elizabeth Whited at 740-638-3463.

• The Cumberland Homemakers 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6, at the Airport Denny’s outside Zanesville for lunch and trip to the White Pillars Christmas Shop in Norwich. The next regular meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at the Guinot residence on Lestock Road. Bring a covered dish, tableware and a $5 present for a gift exchange. State of study is Colorado.

• The Freeland Valley Antique Power Club will have a potluck at 1 p.m. with a meeting to follow Dec. 6 at Rix Mills Presbyterian Church.

• Cumberland Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Village Building.

• A Christmas program will be at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 20 at Ark Spring Baptist Church. The annual Christmas Candlelight service will be at 6 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

Christmas Happenings

• The Howell-Craig Insurance Company is collecting items for donation to the Samaritan House in Caldwell. Needed items are shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, bar soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and disinfectant wipes. Monetary donations will also be accepted until Dec. 29.

• The Meigs Alumni Association is selling Pearl Valley Cheese as a holiday fundraiser to benefit window replacement at the school. Cheese is $5 per 12 ounce wedge. Contact Elizabeth Ann Davis at 740-674-6669 for more information and to order. Deliveries will be Dec. 19 and 20.

• Any churches or organizations in the Cumberland area who wish to have Christmas week events listed as a Cumberland News item must have information to John LePage by Dec. 14.
