High School Roundup: West M boys, Rosecrans, JG girls soccer notch victories

FALLS TOWNSHIP — West Muskingum was able to control the action in a 2-1 win against visiting Maysville in Muskingum Valley League boys soccer Thursday.

Kayne Johnson scored off a Casey Zigo assist at the 16:46 mark of the first half, putting the Tornadoes (2-2, 2-0) up 1-0 at the break.

About eight minutes into the second half, Jeff Knaup’s throw-in found Kyle Lones on the back side for a tally that stretched the West M advantage to 2-0.

Maysville (1-3, 1-2) got on the board with less than seven minutes remaining in the match when Andy Ford scored on a direct kick.

Ian Myers had five saves for the Tornadoes, and Wesley Flinn made four stops for Maysville.

West Muskingum takes on Philo at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at Crew Stadium.

Girls Soccer

Rosecrans 4, New Philadelphia 1: Kylan Harper and Darby Lynch had two goals apiece, as the Bishops moved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the East Central Ohio League.

Chloe Amich had two assists, Lynch added an assist, and Allison Losco made two saves behind another strong defensive effort in the victory.

Joy Leindecker had the Quakers’ goal — the first allowed by Rosecrans this season.

John Glenn 7, Maysville 0: Harlie Gregory kicked in a hat trick and assisted another goal, as the Muskies improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the MVL.

Gregory found Ashley Townsend at 32:13 to put John Glenn on the board. Gregory scored her first goal about 14 minutes later, and Abby Wagner converted a penalty kick at 17:14 to make it 3-0 at the half.

Gregory scored goals from assists by Peyton Harrison and Wagner, Townsend kicked in a goal off a Wagner assist, and Wagner scored her second goal in the second half.

Kennidy Coil made one stop on one Maysville shot, and Holly Jones had nine steals in the win.

Riley Hartley had 13 saves off 20 shots for the Panthers (0-3, 0-2).

Morgan 1, West Muskingum 0: Kara Hopkins scored with 28 minutes left in the first half, as the host Raiders knocked off the Tornadoes in MVL action.

Morgan owned an 11-6 edge in shots.

Volleyball

Maysville 25, 25, 25, New Lexington 16, 12, 19: Madison Riggle hit 13 kills to go with two blocks and two aces in Maysville’s sweep of host New Lex in MVL play.

Aubrie Clarke passed out 19 assists to go with two aces, Jensen Israel added five kills and Kori Sidwell collected six digs, three kills, three aces and a block for Maysville.

Maria Fondale had nine kills and a block, Miranda Kincaid passed out 20 assists and Taya Beard added four kills, a block and three aces to lead New Lex.

Tri-Valley 25, 25, 25, Morgan 23, 11, 15: Mollie George hit nine kills and made three blocks to lead the Scotties past the visiting Raiders in the MVL.

Brianna Dawson added 10 kills, four digs, two aces and a block, Hannah George made 21 digs and Avery Miller collected eight kills, three aces, six digs and 18 assists for Tri-Valley (3-1, 2-0).

Lexi Duffy had six kills, three aces and one block, Shayna McGrew added nine assists and two aces and Lilly Matheney chipped in 11 digs and three kills for Morgan.

Crooksville 22, 25, 25, 25, Sheridan 25, 15, 14, 18: Carson Miller hit 15 kills, Jade Thompson had 13 digs and Lauren Rambo passed out 23 assists as the host Ceramics (3-3, 2-1) outlasted the Generals in the MVL.

Addie Smith was 13-of-14 serving with 11 kills and four digs, Emma Conrad went 15 of 16 on serves with 20 assists and six digs, and Donna Swinehart was 7-of-7 serving with seven digs to pace Sheridan.

Philo 25, 25, 25, West Muskingum 10, 6, 11: Madison Clayton and Maddi Smith combined for 17 kills and 29 points to lead the Electrics (5-1, 1-1) to an MVL win at the Power Plant.

Clayton had nine kills and 17 points, Smith eight kills and 12 points and Hunter Barnes seven kills and 13 points for Philo. Hannah Allen added 34 assists.

Laikyn Lauvray’s five kills and Sarah Junk’s 11 assists led West Muskingum.

Boys Golf

West Muskingum 177, Morgan 189: Blake Stubbins shot 39 to pace the Tornadoes in an MVL win at Lakeside. Zack Herron added a 45, Ryan Ackerman a 46 and Zack Garber a 47.

The Raiders were led by medalist Cohen Hopkins with a 38.

Cambridge 162, Marietta 165, Zanesville 166: Nolan Kimberly carded a 38 to lead the Blue Devils in the IGL match on the par-36 front nine at Cambridge Country Club.

J.J. Burns added a 40 and Jared Ball and Jace Ruggerio shot 44 to round out the scoring. Joslyn Goins had 45 and Jewel Goins 51

Marietta’s Jeff Hensler was medalist with a 37, and Jacob Feldner shot 38 for the Bobcats.
