MANSFIELD – A mattress caught fire in a Bartley Avenue home Sunday, causing smoke and water damage to the rental property.

Mansfield firefighters responded to a call for a structure fire at 4:45 p.m. Sunday at 135 Bartley Ave. and quickly extinguished the fire.

Damage was limited mostly to the mattress, bedding and bed frame, but the fire resulted in smoke damage in the upstairs bedroom as well as water damage on the first floor, fire Capt. Dan Barnhill said.

Barnhhill described the damage to the home as “nothing that can’t be fixed.”

A female tenant and her 3-year-old child were home at the time of the fire. Both were able to escape without injury and are staying with friends after the fire.

Firefighters attempted to contact the homeowner, who was out of town at the time of the fire, Barnhill said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Barnhill said it did not appear to be electrical. The renter told firefighters that she does not smoke in the home because of her young daughter.
