Officials: Man to face charges after high-speed chase

Staff Report

NEWARK — A man was arrested after a high-speed car pursuit that ended around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday at Country Club Drive and Kreider Boulevard in Newark, law enforcement officials reported.

The Heath Police Department responded to a complaint Tuesday afternoon at Hobby Lobby on Hebron Road in which a female victim had called to report that Anthony Hopper, 30, had been attempting to take pictures up her skirt, according to a news release from the department.

Hopper is a registered sex offender, according to the release.

When police approached, Hopper fled the scene in his truck, the report said. As Heath police followed, it was reported that Hopper attempted to force the officers' vehicles off the road.

The chase was broken off for safety concerns when Hopper starting going into oncoming lanes, scanner traffic indicated Tuesday.

According to Heath police, a short time after the pursuit had been terminated, the suspect was spotted again in Newark, and the chase resumed.

The Newark Division of Police assisted in the end of the pursuit, which ended at Country Club Drive and Kreider Boulevard when a Newark officer collided with Hopper's truck, officials reported. The Licking County Sheriff's Office also assisted in the second part of the pursuit, according to Heath police.

Hopper was taken into custody by Newark police and will face charges of failure to comply with an order of a police officer and aggravated assault on a police officer.  He also may face additional charges for voyeurism, the release said.
