COSHOCTON - A Brinkhaven man is charged with tampering with evidence in connection with a hit-and-run crash that briefly hospitalized a 9-year-old boy last week.

Kristopher S. McCombs, 40, of 32822 County Road 452, Brinkhaven, is being held in the Coshocton County Justice Center on a $5,000 bond set Tuesday by Judge Timothy France in Coshocton Municipal Court. France has scheduled a preliminary hearing in the case for 1 p.m. Feb. 17.

McCombs is charged with tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

Coshocton County Prosecutor Jason Given declined to reveal the details of that charge, but said his office will pursue other charges as well.

"A grand jury will be presented with evidence for other charges," Given said. "That's what we anticipate."

McCombs has been in custody in the County Justice Center since Saturday, said Lt. Dean Hettinger of the sheriff's office. He formally was charged Tuesday in Municipal Court.

Witnesses told authorities a dark Chevrolet Malibu hit a 9-year-old Coshocton boy at about 3:40 p.m. Feb. 3 in the 400 block of North 15th Street. That car left the scene.

The boy came home from the hospital Friday after surgery on his leg, Hettinger said. He is recovering at his home in Coshocton.

Medics from the Coshocton County Emergency Medical Service originally took the boy to Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, but he later was transferred to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus by a MedFlight emergency helicopter.

The sheriff's office continues to investigate the incident.
