LANCASTER — The roofs on the shelter house and the concession stand at Miller Park have probably lasted for decades.

A recent donation will allow the parks department to replace those roofs so the buildings can last for a few more decades.

“I really am not sure how long ago it has been since the roofs were replaced,” said Steve Gayfield, superintendent of Lancaster Parks & Recreation Department. “But it was getting to a point that we needed to replace them before the structures themselves were damaged.”

Gayfield said some of the roofs at Miller Park could be more than 20 years old, and he credits the Friends of Lancaster Parks & Recreation with making the project attainable.

“They donated around $9,000 in supplies and roofing materials, which will allow us to replace them all,” Gayfield said. “We couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Carrie Woody, a member of the Friends of Lancaster Parks & Recreation, said the organization is funded through membership dues and works closely with the parks department to identify projects where they can help.

She said the organization prefers projects such as the shelter house roof because they can provide the supplies and the department can provide the labor to replace the roofs with their own staff.

Crews from the parks department started Monday on replacing the roofs and were working on them again Tuesday.

Weather permitting, the new roofs should be installed in the next couple of days.
