Newark buses bump at event; some students transported

Advocate staff report

NEWARK – No serious injuries were reported after two Newark City School buses struck one another in a parking lot Wednesday night, Community Outreach Coordinator Seth Roy said Thursday.

The buses were in a parking lot at a Lancaster school after a football game, one behind the other.

Roy said Thursday the buses were about 10 to 15 feet apart and stopped before the impact. The driver of the second bus moved the bus forward and it bumped the first bus, Roy said.

The buses were carrying middle school athletes. Ten students were taken to an area hospital out of precaution, Roy said. Some of the students had minor injuries ranging from bumps and bruises to small concussions, he said.

All 10 students were released from the hospital Wednesday night. The other students were taken back to Newark on buses.

Parents were immediately notified of the incident, Roy said.

Some students stayed home Thursday and the district was in touch with a number of families throughout the day, Roy said Thursday afternoon.

The district is reviewing the incident to determine whether any disciplinary action is warranted against the bus driver.

The Lancaster Police Department took a report from the incident, but the report was not completed with a narrative or information about possible citations at the time it was requested by local media.
