Can you handle the Goliath Burger?

Jennifer L. Manfrin

WEST LAFAYETTE – Whether you have an extreme appetite or like a meal you can share, Wyler's Dari-Hut has a major burger to temp your tastebuds.

Weighing in at around 1 ½ pounds with all the toppings, and measuring about 9 ½ inches, the Goliath is perfect for everyone from big guys to petite girls who love a great burger, said co-owner Tracy Wyler.

"People of all sizes love this thing," he said.

The Dari-Hut, located at 408 E. Main St., has been in operation since the 1950s, explained Wyler. He and his wife, Debbie, have owned the establishment since 2006. The Goliath Burger is an example of how customers can get a lot of food for their money, Debbie said.

"It's an amazing burger. Guys think 'I can eat it all,' and women often take it home and save some for later," Debbie said.

The Goliath Burger consists of two 8-ounce sirloin patties, which are made of good-quality meat with only 10 percent fat, Tracy explained. Grilled to perfection then topped with seven strips of bacon, four slices of cheese and "the works" that includes lettuce, tomato, pickles and condiments, the Goliath makes the perfect meal, he said.

"There is no junk in our burgers. We take our time and make them right, and we make them by hand."

Prior to creating the Goliath Burger, Tracy said the 1/2 pound Beastly and large King burgers were already on the menu. The inspiration for the huge addition came from a customer that would stop by the Dari-Hut after working out to order the Beastly, large fries and a giant shake.

"He said, 'you know, that's a good burger, but I think you need to make something bigger," said Tracy, who was happy to oblige his customer's request. "He tried the Goliath, and could barely finish it all," he said.

Customers will also find many types of sandwiches, and a large variety of sides, shakes, soft-serve and 16 hand-dipped ice cream flavors to accompany the Goliath -- the burger that Tracy said keeps bringing back customers of all sizes for more.

"Come try it. How big of a boy are you?" he said.

Wyler's Dari-Hut is open from the first week of March through the week before Christmas, and now accepts debit and credit cards. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
