Downtown Marion gears up for holiday season

Staff report

MARION - Downtown is the place to be in December, with multiple events planned in the run-up to 2016.

“Throughout the month of December, Marion area residents will be able to enjoy shopping at one of the many specialty retail shops and participating in the activities created to entertain and inspire. Mark your calendars and plan to attend these events,” said Nissa Stump, manager of Downtown Marion Inc.

On Dec. 10 Downtown Marion Inc. will host the Sixth Annual Under the Christmas Tree Auction at Park Place, 146 W. Center St. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction, heavy appetizers and a cash bar. The live auction will begin at 7 p.m., with auctioneer Ben Higgins Realty & Auction Co. LLC.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11, the Second Christmas Church Tour will take place. This will be a walking tour of nine historic downtown churches and will include horse-drawn wagon rides, a live Nativity scene and strolling carolers. Purchasing a ticket in advance ensures you will receive a commemorative booklet explaining the history of each church.

Locals can top the year off by attending the New Year’s Eve Winter Wonderland Gala, also at Park Place. The celebration is sponsored by United Bank and begins at 7:30 p.m. with dinner served at 8 p.m. and light entertainment by Kensington Park. At 9:30 p.m., At Your Request DJ Service will provide music for the New Year’s Eve party.

“At 11:30 p.m. we encourage everyone to gather in the parking lot of 172 W. Center St. for the annual Pop-N-Drop where you will enjoy a fantastic display of fireworks, hot chocolate and popcorn,” Stump said.
