FREMONT – With the dog days of summer upon us, families are looking for ways to enjoy their weekends before school starts, and the first Summer Days Family Fest offered a way to cool off and play some games.

Judi Simon, administrator of child support for the county, said the activities were fun for the kids, and parents were able to get more information about community agencies and what roles they play in Sandusky County.

“This is in honor of support awareness month,” Simon said.

Among the agencies at the event were the Fremont Police Department, the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, the Ballville Township Fire Department, and Teaching and Mentoring Communities.

“We are the migrant seasonal head start program,” said disabilities coordinator Nathan Cummings. “We work with kids to get them ready for kindergarten.”

The program for families under the poverty line is offered to families that work in agriculture, Cummings said.

Health and Safety Director Cassandra McKinstry said the Fremont office is one of just seven offices in the state offering child care services.

Another organization in attendance was Another Chance Sanctuary in Clyde. Cathy Hineline brought Elliot the Maltese, a one-pound female dog born prematurely without a complete skull.

“She was not supposed to live, but she is now 2. She started out of as Another Chance animal and was adopted by Cheryl Garcia,” Hineline said.

Garcia is in charge of the reptiles at the sanctuary with more than 30 chameleons, Hineline said.

Hineline said the sanctuary protects, rehabilitates and finds homes for animals such as Elliot.
