Fire damages duplex on Washington Ave.

Staff report

LANCASTER — A Monday evening house fire on Washington Avenue damaged both apartments in a duplex, according to Lancaster firefighters.

Fire crews were called to 830 Washington Ave. shortly before 5 p.m. on the report of a house fire.

Lancaster Fire Department Capt. Steve Maffin said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen of the upstairs unit of the duplex. While an investigator was still looking for a cause of the fire, Maffin said it appeared to have a been a cooking fire that spread to the rest of the kitchen.

While both units sustained damage, Maffin said the fire was contained to the upstairs apartment. “We have a sagging false ceiling to clean up (downstairs),” Maffin said of the water damage to the lower unit.

No one was injured in the fire and Maffin did not immediately have a damage estimate available at the scene.
