COSHOCTON – Lynn Slack was a stay-at-home mom tired of staying at home.

The mother of five from South Zanesville opened her first Mom's Boutique last April in Dresden and her second opened Feb. 22 in Coshocton's Downtowner Plaza. A grand opening event March 14 will feature raffles, giveaways, a 50-50 drawing, item sales and an appearance by Mickey Mouse.

Slack quit her job of seven years as a receptionist at the Muskingum County Juvenile Court when she became pregnant with twin girls. In fact, the mom in Mom's Boutique stands for Mother of Multiples.

She quickly found that not working wasn't for her and became a vendor at a consignment shop in Byesville. Friends in Dresden convinced her to open her own shop.

Slack knows there are stores like hers out there, but she finds most to be cluttered and overpriced. Whether used or new, Slack carries name-brand clothes and tries to keep the cost of most merchandise under $10.

"You've got to make sure customers are happy. Give them what they want, bring what they want in," she said.

Clothes and shoes are half off on Wednesdays. A rewards card good for both stores gives 10 percent off a customer's next buy after making 10 purchases.

Slack has five vendors with tables in her store and buys clothes and items from individuals. Clothing donations are accepted too, which Slack then passes on to fire victims in need.

The store features kids clothing of all sizes, maternity-wear, toys, home decor and more. A big, stuffed giraffe sits on the counter behind the cash register keeping an eye on the shop.

Slack has three employees at her Dresden store and is looking to hire for the Coshocton outlet after she gets settled in.

When she was scouting for a second location, Coshocton was the main place she looked. She spent some time as a teen in Coshocton and always liked the area.

"The people here are so supportive of their local stores," Slack said. "They don't care about the weather, they don't care about the rain. They get out and shop and like to keep it in town."
