Lions club to host annual Sweet Corn 5K

MILLERSPORT – The Millersport Lions Club in conjunction with the Sweet Corn Festival will hold its 26th Annual 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 5 at the Lions Sweet Corn Festival Grounds on Chautauqua Boulevard.

Pre-registration for the race is $18. Race day registration is $25 and it begins at 7:15 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each of 16 age groups. Ride Concession Workers Meal

On Sept. 3, the Millersport United Methodist Church will welcome the Sweet Corn Festival Ride Concession Workers to Millersport by serving them a dinner of nonfestival type food. The workers will be served a lasagna dinner at the New Lions Clubhouse at noon.

Tuesday’s Table

The final Tuesday’s Table in Millersport was held Aug. 25 at Sammy J’s. Thornville’s Grace Lutheran Church will continue with their involvement in Tuesday’s Table from 5 to 8 p.m. with Leathernecks on Sept. 1 at Champs. Attendance for the Thornville group has been growing with six to 11 people attending.

Millersport Senior Citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met at noon Aug. 21 at the Lions Clubhouse with 28 members and one guest present. The club provided sloppy joes for the main entrée for the potluck lunch.

President Ed Otte conducted the business meeting. The club has been invited to join with the Pleasantville club for a potluck picnic at noon Sept. 23 at Rising Park in Lancaster. The shut-ins were remembered. Door prizes were won by Pat Miller, Vivian Schroeder, Mary Dupler, Vivian Crist and Carol King. The meeting was adjourned for cards and Bingo.

Due to the Sweet Corn Festival, there will be no meeting on Sept. 4. The next meeting will be held at noon Sept. 18 at the Lions Clubhouse, 2839 Chautauqua Blvd., Millersport. Those serving on the September committee are Rosalie Brookover, Barb Clark, Vivian Crist and Joanne Severance. Anyone who is 55 and older is encouraged to join.

Walnut Township Trustees

The Walnut Township Trustees met Aug. 18 in the township office.

A public hearing was held concerning a zoning district change for 290 Baltimore-Somerset Road, NE., current zoning district I-1 with a proposed change to zoning district I-2.

During the department reports Larry Neeley, regional planning commission representative reported on discussions concerning a sanitary line and annexation issues. Kevin Clouse discussed zoning issues. Tim Morris reported on truck repairs, Dura Patching of roads, and the Buckeye Lake Project road traffic.

The following items of new business were discussed:

•2015 Mowing Bids — Murphy Mowing was chosen starting immediately as needed. Mike King will work with them.

•Zoning District Change for 290 Baltimore-Somerset Road was approved.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 1 in the township office.

Millersport Village Council

Village Council met in regular session Aug. 11 in council chambers.

Councilman Thomas Middleton submitted his resignation effective Aug. 2. Beth Warner was nominated and approved to fill the vacant seat on council.

The swimming pool officially closed Aug. 9.

Fire Chief Bob Price submitted a copy of the bill of sale ($29,000) for the boat on loan from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This is for insurance purposes. There are concern about liability issues running the boat in shallow water.

Police Chief Mark Consolo gave council activity statistics for the month of July. Discussion was held concerning resident passes for the Sweet Corn Festival. Councilwoman Donna Thogmartin asked when the village farm land will be available for local farmers to bid for next season.

• Resolution 1244, an explanation of the Memorandum of Understanding between ODNR and the Village concerning the Fire Department’s use of two ODNR boats, was approved

•Resolution 1247 promoting Martin Knoble to lieutenant in the fire department was approved.

•Resolution 1248 closing Chautauqua Boulevard and Canal Drive on Sept. 5 for the annual 5K Sweet Corn Festival Run was approved.

•Ordinance 769 appropriating money for the Street Levy Fund was approved.

•Council set the date and time for Trick-or-Treat for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29.

The next meeting of council will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in council chambers.
