Maker Mondays spark imaginations
PORT CLINTON - Imaginations were hard at work as a dozen children of all ages created houses, cars and other unique contraptions with toys set out at the Ida Rupp Public Library on Monday afternoon.
"Maker Mondays," which take place every other Monday afternoon from 3:30 until 5:30 in the library's multi-purpose room, are all about getting children to create, solve problems and play, said Jennifer Buch, Ida Rupp's youth services supervisor.
Each Maker Monday, Buch sets up tables with toys such as LEGOs, Playstix, Marble Runs, Crystal Climbers, Pipe Builders and more for preschoolers through middle-schoolers to play with.
The activities are often rotated so there's never the same ones each time they meet, and there is no registration or fee required to participate.
Children also can sign up to win a free book at the end of the evening, which is usually themed around building and creating, Buch said.
"It's good for them to use their imaginations," Buch said. "They can play with other children and build."
It's also a bonding opportunity for parents and children, which often gets overlooked in today's busy world. Silas Davis, 3, and his mother Joy, both of Port Clinton, worked together to build a LEGO car to carry LEGO characters across the table.
"We try not to miss any library events," Davis said of herself, Silas and daughter Emma, 7. "It's always fun."
