CATAWBA ISLAND - The cold and rain could not keep the turkey chasers away.

Several hundred runners braved the elements Saturday to chase a turkey for more than 3 miles around Catawba Island, all in the name of a good cause.

The sixth annual Jessie Schenk Memorial Turkey Chase 5K run and walk was the biggest one yet, held once again at the Catawba Island Club to benefit the Jessica Schenk Scholar/Athlete Memorial Scholarship fund, which supports Port Clinton High School seniors.

"We actually had more pre-registrations this year than we ever had before," said Lara Skuza, an organizer of the race and Schenk's sister.

The event began in 2010 to honor the memory of Jessica Schenk, herself a student at Port Clinton High School before graduating in 2008 and pursuing a degree in physical education.

While attending West Virginia University and Kent State University, Schenk continued to pursue her "main passion" for running, before she died in 2009.

"She is missed intensely by her family, friends and colleagues," states the race's website. "Jessie will always be remembered with love and laughter."

The fund has given more than $16,000 in scholarships to Port Clinton students, Skuza said.

"It benefits students that have excelled in both academics, athletics and community service," she said.

Patrick Edwards, a longtime family friend of the Schenks, reprized his role as the turkey this year. It is tradition for the previous year's overall race winner to lead the pack in the turkey costume the following year. Edwards has missed only one.

"I grew up with the Schenks from middle school on," he said. "To me, it's as much a tradition as Thanksgiving around here."

Donning the turkey costume has become part of the tradition for Edwards.

"It's a fun part of it, but it's a little itchy," Edwards said. "But on days like today it keeps me protected from the elements."

Next year, however, Edwards will have to win the turkey back, as he finished second behind Joe Guerra, this year's overall winner.

Though the turkey chasing is concluded for 2015, those wanting to donate to the scholarship fund still may do so at jessiesturkeychase.yolasite.com.
