NEWARK – Police briefly shut down South Fifth Street in Newark on Wednesday after a utility worker reported a man came out of his residence holding what looked like a firearm.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Sgt. Bert Gliatta said officers responded to the area after the utility worker called police. The worker was in the area for a service call and told police a man came outside with what looked like a rifle. The worker believed the incident to be threatening or confrontational and called police, Gliatta said.

Police shut down the road in the area to clear the home and safely end the incident.

The man came out of the house and surrendered to police without incident. Gliatta said the man was taken into custody and will likely be charged with inducing panic.

The road has since reopened.
