NEW CONCORD – Under new ownership at the Dairy Duchess, the community's favorite dishes, including one slush in particular, are staying on the menu.

Harlie Gregory, 16, of Cambridge, prepares an ice cream cone for customers Friday at Dairy Duchess, located on West Main Street in New Concord.

The Dairy Duchess, an ice cream and sandwich shop in New Concord, has existed in the village since the 1950s and serves sandwiches, ice cream, milkshakes and fresh squeezed lemonade.

But the Muskie Dream Slush is a staple of the shop and one of the most popular items on the menu, said new owner Abby McClain.

The Muskie Dream Slush is an orange and cherry flavored slush topped with vanilla ice cream. Other slush flavors are available, McClain said, but the dream slush carries some of the history of the community through its name and how long it has been on the menu.

"Muskie slush has been on the menu since I was little," McClain said.

McClain bought the shop four weeks ago and is keeping most of the original recipes. The shop has a long history in and connection with New Concord and the people who live there.

The shop is a historic place for New Concord, McClain said.

"(Keeping the history) is important to us," she said. "It's like we're incorporating all of the previous owners' (memories)."

The Muskie Dream Slush was so named because of the local schools as well as the university's nicknames and mascots. McClain said it makes her proud to be part of what kids will remember about New Concord when they get older.

"The joys of just serving a little kid ice cream," she said. "We can still give kids those memories. Make it a tradition for other families."
