PORTAGE TOWNSHIP – Looking to take a step back in time and cut a rug this weekend?

Liberty Aviation Museum will host a Big Band Hangar Dance on Friday evening, taking guests back to the 1940s — complete with a 19-piece big band in military dress, food and drink — for a night guests will never forget.

Ohio’s premier big band, the Dan Zola Orchestra, featuring the vocal stylings of Dianne Palmer, will take the stage playing tunes from Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Harry James, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra throughout the evening.

There will be door prizes, drinks and food available at the museum and its Tin Goose Diner. Patriotic, military and period-appropriated outfits are highly encouraged. Prizes will be awarded for best-dressed.

Operations Director Jeff Sondles said the event is the second of four dances held in the museum’s hangar this year, the others are scheduled in October and on New Year’s Eve.

“It’s a great time,” Sondles said. “We had folks in zoot suits last year, the band will be in the khaki Army outfits.”

For those need a refresher course in swing dancing, Black Tie Studios will be giving lessons from 7 until 7:30 p.m., Sondles said.

He said swing dancing has been gaining popularity with millenials in the last few years, with clubs and dances being held in Cleveland recently.

Tickets are $25 per person in advance or $30 at the door. Tables for eight can be reserved for $180.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Liberty Aviation Museum, located at 3515 E. State Road in Portage Township.
