NEWARK – Licking County youth seeking summer jobs can apply with Ohio Means Jobs/Licking County for about 100 available positions.

The income-eligible jobs for applicants age 16-24 include opportunities in building maintenance, landscaping, food service, clerical and other professions.

The Licking County unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent in April, the lowest since October 2001.

The summer job providers include: City of Newark, Carol Strawn Center, East Central Career Programs, Salvation Army, Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County, Kairos Academy and Licking County Educational Service Center-The Citadel.

Windy Murphy, supervisor of business services for OhioMeans/Jobs Licking County, said the annual program gives youth the opportunity to work for an employer, receive feedback, assess their interests and obtain experience to include on a resume.

“It’s just really rewarding because when the youth come in, they’re prepared and putting their best foot forward,” Murphy said. “This is going to be our workforce, and they take it very seriously.”

Applicants are asked what type of job they would like, but many do not have a specific interest, Murphy said.

Still, they can improve on their soft skills, which include arriving on time, displaying a positive attitude, being respectful and dressing appropriately.

“Providers evaluate them at the end of the year and we can share that with other employers,” Murphy said.

Salaries, start times, and number of positions vary by the provider. The minimum wage in Ohio is $8.10, but some pay more.

The jobs vary from about 20 hours a week to 40 hours, but most are 30-35 hours per week.

Applications will be accepted 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Ohio Means Jobs/Licking County, 998 E. Main St., Newark.

Appointments can be set up by calling call 740-670-8700.

To be eligible, applicants must have identification such as a birth certificate or social security card, proof of 30 days of household income and a photo ID. Those age 16 or 17 should be accompanied by a parent.
