Rich’s Picks looking for redemption in Week 2

Last week I basically threw a party and locked myself out of the house.

The debut of Rich’s Picks drew 48 valid entries for Week 1 and I beat exactly none of them. Only four others matched my futility, one of which was my wife – cue the sad-sounding trumpet noise.

Week 1 was ugly for Rich’s Picks. No question, I had an awful week of forecasting the future. My predictions were a paltry 40 percent. That was not a typo. I hit on just four out of my 10 picks, a crudely low number, even for notoriously difficult Week 1.

It’s not just that I was wrong on the winners. It was the severity by which I missed the mark, none bigger than my lack of faith in Margaretta.

No, Willard is not a gang-buster, but I thought the Polar Bears’ overall lack of experience would be the difference in a close game. After squeaking out a 32-point victory, Polar Bear sophomore Noah Hilton wasted little time giving me the business on Twitter, thanking me for my prediction. Glad to have helped.

Clyde, another youthful team, also surprised me by going on the road and completely shutting down a quality Tiffin Columbian squad. And then Fremont Ross, Bellevue and St. Joseph Central Catholic all let me down big-time. Bellevue (33 wrong) and Ross (31) were the week’s biggest let-downs for all entries.

While my week was one to forget, several pickers had terrific starts to the season. Four players corrected predicted nine out of 10 games but only Clyde resident Nick Tea nailed every high school game. His only miss came on the Cleveland-Tampa Bay preseason NFL game, in other words, who cares?

Fremont’s Steve Jones, Bellevue’s Chris Haley and Lakota assistant football coach Bryan Dudash were the other 9-out-of-10 predictors.

Those with eight correct were Denny Carmel (Fremont), Steve Rich (Fremont), Adam Good (Clyde), Chad Baker (Clyde), Ryan Smith (Clyde), Christian Booze (Bellevue), James Blausey (Oak Harbor) and Chris Rawski (Walbridge).

Clearly, it’s time for me to pick up my game with in Week 2 of Rich’s Pick.
