NEWARK – Stuart Moynihan, the city of Newark’s economic development coordinator for almost five years, will leave for a position with JobsOhio.

Moynihan works his last day with the city on Sept. 8, then moves on to Columbus-based JobsOhio, a private, nonprofit organization that promotes job creation and economic development for the state.

He was a member of the Newark Development Partners community improvement corporation and Joint Economic District board, worked to clean up the contaminated former Newark Processing site and worked on retention and expansion programs with existing businesses.

Moynihan said he enjoyed working on efforts to improve the downtown.

“That’s really been a group effort and one of the most exciting things that’s happening,” Moynihan said. “It’s been gaining steady momentum and that’s something I think is going to continue.”

Moynihan said he’ll miss the people here more than anything, and praised their efforts to improve the community.

“The people I’ve worked with and the people in the community have a good sense of doing what’s right for the city,” Moynihan said. “It’s refreshing. There are so many people involved in helping the community.”

Mark Mauter, the city’s development director, said Moynihan will be missed in the department.

“He’s certainly a very integral part and very well respected out in the community,” Mauter said. “He always conducted himself with a high level of integrity, a very professional individual.”

Mauter said it has not been determined if Moynihan will be replaced, as the city faces difficult budget decisions. The development department has four employees working for Mauter.

“We’re going to evaluate our situation,” Mauter said. “The mayor and I will have a conversation. We were pretty lean as it was.”

Moynihan obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio State University. His master’s degree in 2007 was in city and regional planning.

Prior to working in Newark, he worked as a planner in Lombard, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.
