Volunteers raise funds for Muskingum County Dog Pound

ZANESVILLE - Later this month, the Design Studio in Zanesville will be hosting a fundraiser for the dogs at the Muskingum County Dog Pound.

A dog looks out of its cage at the Muskingum County Dog Pound.

The fundraiser, called Cuts for Paws, is scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Design Studio, 1222 Brandywine Blvd. in Zanesville. It will include a Chinese auction, a bake sale, a 50-50 raffle and $10 haircuts.

Ashley Moody, a regular volunteer with the pound who helped organize the event, said all money raised will go toward dog care. Prince of Cuts also will be at the event.

"The funding is strictly for the health and maintenance of the dogs," she said.

Dog care includes routine veterinary care and spaying and neutering, Moody said. Dogs are more likely to be adopted if they are already spayed or neutered. And with adoptions, Moody said volunteers like to put together a basic package for new dog owners, including leashes, collars and other items. Because those items are donated, those packages are given out depending on availability.

"When people adopt a dog, we're trying to educate people a little more on the care of their dogs," she said.

The dog pound takes in dogs just as the Animal Shelter Society does, although the two, while they do collaborate, are entirely separate entities, Moody said.

"We don't want to take the focus off the shelter either, but we want people to know the difference," she said.

Dogs at the pound are eligible for adoption, and they're not necessarily bad or aggressive dogs, she said. Most are good dogs who get wound up living in the facility and calm down when they're away from that environment.

Moody said the pound has taken dogs from hoarding cases and even situations such as house fires. At one point, eight dogs arrived at the pound from one house fire. There also are neglect or abuse cases.

"We've moved a lot of those dogs," she said. "We're running into these situations, and I think a lot of people can help."

The county, she said, has an overpopulation of dogs. Volunteers at the dog pound are still working toward the construction of a new facility, but the fundraiser is separate from that project. This is just about raising money to help care for the dogs.

"Some have been there for almost a year," Moody said.
