Local Kraft plant not involved in turkey bacon recall

Staff report

COSHOCTON – Coshocton’s Kraft Foods’ plant did not process any of the turkey bacon recently recalled over adulteration fears, company officials said.

That product, more than 2 million pounds of Oscar Mayer turkey bacon, was produced in a South Carolina plant, according to Michael Mullen, senior vice president of corporate and government affairs for the Kraft Heinz Company.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service on Tuesday announced the recall by Kraft Heinz Foods Co., of Newberry, S.C., undertaken because company officials feared the bacon might be adulterated, causing it to spoil before the “Best-When-Used-By” date. The recall followed consumer reports of illness after eating the products.

The turkey bacon was produced between May 31 and Aug. 6, was shipped nationwide and was exported to the Bahamas and St. Martin, the FSIS reported.

According to a USDA press release, the products subject to recall include:

•Oscar Mayer Select Uncured Turkey Bacon, 56-oz. cardboard boxes, with Best-When-Used-By dates of Aug. 24 through Oct. 26, 2015.

••Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon, Smoked Cured Turkey Chopped and Formed, 36-oz. cardboard boxes, with Best-When-Used-By dates of Aug. 28 through Oct. 20, 2015.

•Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon, Smoked Cured Turkey Chopped and Formed, 48-oz. cardboard boxes, with Best-When-Used-By dates of Sept. 3 through Oct. 30, 2015.

Those products all bear an establishment number of P-9070 inside the USDA inspection mark, and the line number of RS19.
