COSHOCTON – Drivers entering and leaving the city’s western edge via the bridge on Ohio 541 faced their share of orange cones, hard hats, grinders and steamrollers this week.

Since Monday, workers from the Shelly Co., of Thornville, have been grinding down the old road surface in that area and laying new asphalt. The work has required closing lanes and slowing traffic.

Since late May, Shelly has been milling and paving 4.9 miles of Ohio 541 through Coshocton at a cost of $2.1 million. ODOT is overseeing that work, The state is paying 80 percent of the cost of repaving and striping, with the city picking up the remaining 20 percent.

The project is proceeding on schedule, according to Ericka Pfeifer, spokeswoman for ODOT District Five. By contract, the work must be finished by Oct. 31, Pfeifer said.
