The white bass run on the Sandusky River continues, and a run by the Marblehead Lighthouse should start soon, bait store owners said.

Although the white bass run on the Sandusky River likely has peaked, anglers are still reeling in the fish there.

Most reports have come from the rapids area around downtown Fremont, said Bernie Whitt, owner of Anglers Supply in Fremont. An angler who had been fishing from a boat stopped in the store Wednesday and showed Whitt an 18-inch white bass.

"There are still some big bass in the river," Whitt said in his store's fishing report.

Anglers are using a variety of baits, including Twister tails, jigs and bobbers with hair jigs tipped with minnows, he said.

Next, the bass are expected to run on the lake and by the Marblehead Lighthouse, said Dwight Ritchie, owner of Hi-Way Bait and Tackle in Danbury Township.

Meanwhile, different types of fish are biting around Lake Erie's western basin, Ritchie said.

Walleye are biting between the Marblehead Peninsula and Kelleys Island. Yellow perch have been caught in about 35 feet of water off the Marblehead Lighthouse, he said.

"Crappie are still hanging in there," he said. "Bluegill and largemouth (bass) are always hanging around the marinas."

Anglers need permission to fish on private property. They also can seek crappie, bluegill, bass and other fish at public access areas, such as Catawba Island State Park, East Harbor State Park and state fishing accesses in Marblehead.

Anglers: Do you have fish you don't want?

Back to the Wild in Castalia took in a bald eaglet found in a fallen nest in Oak Harbor on Wednesday, and the eaglet needs fish to eat.

The wildlife rehabilitation center cannot use catfish or carp, but it would appreciate donations of perch, trout, bluegill and bass.

Call the center at 419-684-9539 before bringing fish in case it has enough fish on hand. The center can only keep so much fish before it spoils.
