Sounds of music continue with give-away

FREMONT – Walking through Terra State Community College Recital Hall on Saturday brought back memories for Megan Kosta and her mom, Joanne.

Communities members flocked to Terra State to get their hands on free music offered by the college from former professor Mary Gabel.

Joanne, daughter of former music instructor Mary Gabel, said the day -- a give-away sheet music and books of music from Gabel's collection -- was a perfect way to honor her mother. Gabel established the Gabel Studios Music Library at Terrra State. She died in January at age 87.

“My mother was all about wanting to help anybody who loved music,” Joanne said.

While sorting through several lesson books on music, Megan said it made her remember her grandmother and the fun she had learning music from her.

“It’s special to share her love of music,” Megan said of the music give-away, which was organized by the Terra College Foundation and the Terra Choral Society.

Joanne said many people searching for music were too modest about how much to take. She said the music was free, and wanted everyone to get as much as they could handle.

Hundreds of books with thousands of notes spreading across the pages were taken by teachers, music lovers and students.

“I am a music major at Heidelberg University. I play the guitar. Most of the music here is for piano, so I might learn piano,” said student Howard Cole.

Heidelberg student Howard Cole searches for guitar music to help him practice.

Regina Kanary of Oak Harbor left with enough music to restart a personal music studio for teaching.

“Mrs. G. (Gabel) loved music,” Choral Society member Deb Billow said. “She helped bring the department here. This will help build her legacy.”
