NEWARK – Owens Corning plans to hire 10 people to fill the positions of crew person/warehouse lift truck operator at its Newark plant.

The hiring at the Case Avenue plant is because of attrition, Owens Corning spokesman Chuck Hartlage said, not the result of adding new positions.

Windy Murphy, supervisor of business services for OhioMeansJobs of Licking County, said anyone can apply at jobs.owenscorningcareers.com, and OhioMeansJobs will prescreen applicants for Owens Corning specifications.

The positions are entry level production and warehouse positions paying $15.87 per hour. Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent along with two years of experience in manufacturing or warehouse/distribution, or military service.

Owens Corning reported the April to June period was its 16th consecutive quarter of insulation growth in earnings before income tax.

Insulation sales increased 3 percent during the first six months of the year, compared with 2014, reaching $830 million. The company said insulation sales should benefit from growth in new residential construction in the U.S.

Owens is not the only local business hiring, as 33 companies will participate in the 16th annual OhioMeansJobs/Licking County Employment Expo from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 at Doubletree by Hilton, 50 N. Second St., Newark.

The expo only accepts companies that are currently hiring.

Four companies coming to the expo are hiring more than 50 people, Murphy said. They are: Abercrombie and Fitch, Harry & David, Randstad for Fanatics, and Speed Commerce.

Licking County hit record numbers in July of 89,000 people in the workforce and 85,100 people employed, but the unemployment rate remained at 4.4 percent. The county’s unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in July 2014.

The 10-county Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Licking County, posted the lowest unemployment rate, 4.2 percent, of the 12 Ohio-based MSAs in July.

The Cincinnati MSA was next, with a 4.6 percent unemployment rate. The Steubenville-Weirton, West Virginia MSA had the highest rate at 7.9 percent.
