Couple wants saloon to have family feel
ZANESVILLE – Corry Hazen comes from a line of excavators turned bar and restaurant owners. Slightly more than a month ago, Hazen opened the doors of the Angry Bull Saloon in Zanesville.
The Angry Bull looks like a bar and it's got "saloon" in its name, but Hazen hopes it becomes a relaxed, family-friendly place. Right now, only those who are 21 or older are allowed in after 10 p.m., but that may change.
In the fall, high school sports games often don't end until 9 or 9:30 p.m., and Hazen and Regan Kinder, Hazen's girlfriend, want theirs to be the kind of place a football team can come and get wings after a game.
"We want to have that family feel to it," he said.
The kind of food the bar serves includes steak, pizza, kabobs, wings, onion rings, mushrooms and frog legs. Hazen said they also offer carry-out, and the lunch special is different every day.
Hazen's father owns a bar in Newark, but he formerly had an excavating company, which Hazen worked for. Hazen continued working in excavating until he bought the building that would become the Angry Bull.
"It's different," he said. "It's a change."
The saloon has been open for more than a month, but its grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 14-15. Doublecut will be performing and other activities and specials are scheduled. Merchandise, such as T-shirts, hats and coozies, are sold there, and Hazen wants to sponsor a golf outing sometime in August.
During the building's renovation, Hazen hired local contractors, and when the business opened, Hazen hired local people to run it, including members of his family.
"We try to do local as much as we can," he said.
Both Hazen and Kinder grew up in Zanesville, so being part of the community and giving back is a priority for them.
"That's who supports us," Hazen said. "Our local community is who's going to support local businesses. ... I think that stuff is important."
