Kayaking Curtice man rescued from Lake Erie

Staff report

PORT CLINTON - A Curtice man was rescued from the water and hospitalized after his kayak overturned in Lake Erie on Thursday.

Mitchell Waters, 18, was taken to Magruder Hospital after being retrieved from the water and transported back to shore by Kenneth Grosjean, owner of Knecht Marina, who had a boat in the water at the time.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office first received a call of a person in distress in the water off of Sand Beach Road in Portage Township. The caller reported that the person, later identified as Waters, was about 150 yards from shore and did not appear to be wearing a life jacket.

Sheriff's deputies, along with personnel from the Port Clinton Fire Department and North Central EMS, arrived at the scene to assist.

Waters has since been released from the hospital. The kayak sank and was not recovered, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
