Schedule problems push fireworks to July 3

Rene Dix

It does not seem possible that this is the tenth year members of the current 4th of July Committee have worked together to organize Woodville’s annual summer celebration. Everything should be easy and simply fall into place, no problems. Unfortunately, that just is not the case.

The committee picked the dates for this year’s celebration two years ago. It would be Thursday through Saturday, July 2 to 4, with the beer tent opening Wednesday night. We thought we had a schedule in place.

And then we learned in January that our new fireworks company would not be available on Saturday night. Longstanding customers had been booked well over a year ago, and the holiday falls on Saturday this year, so the schedule was already full. We were a new customer and at the bottom of the seniority list.

We tried checking with other fireworks companies, but they were completely booked for July 4. So we moved a few things around. The schedule is a bit scrambled, but all of the favorite events will still happen. The 5K race will be Thursday evening, with the fireworks on Friday night and the parade on Saturday evening.

We are still working on a last few events and will soon be recruiting volunteers to help during the celebration. The tentative schedule, as well as registration forms for both the race and the parade, are available on the committee’s website at www.woodville.net/fourth.

If you would like to volunteer, or have any questions, email woodville4th@gmail.com. More information about the celebration will be included in this column over the next few weeks.

If you like to try new recipes, then the Woodville Library’s Cookbook Club is perfect for you. Simply pick a recipe, prepare it, and share it (potluck style) at 7 p.m. June 3.

This month’s featured cookbook is “Miss Kay’s Duck Commander Kitchen” by Kay Robertson, but if you don’t have time to stop at the library to pick up a copy, just bring a favorite recipe to share.

More information is available at birchard.org/cookbookClub.htm.
