‘Baby food bandit’ goes on vandalism spree

PORT CLINTON – In what has been dubbed the work of the “baby food bandit,” two cars and a home in different areas of town were vandalized at some point between midnight Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

All the vandalism attacks had the same characteristics: A vehicle in the 700 block of Lincoln Court, another vehicle in the 900 block of Maryland Street, and a home in the 200 block of Oak Street were all splattered with baby food.

The first incident reported was at 10:13 a.m., when a woman showed officers that someone had either poured or thrown baby food on her boyfriend’s car and put some sort of dry baby food on the top, rear and front of the vehicle, including the windshield.

Although the woman didn’t have any suspects in mind, she noted that someone might have something against her boyfriend, who was in jail at the time.

About a half-hour later, at 10:44 a.m., police responded to another report of vandalism to a vehicle. While en route, even the dispatcher advised of the similarities in this call to the previous.

This time, a man showed police the baby food bottles lying on the side of the road and described his fiancee’s vehicle, though it had been cleaned before the police’s arrival. After seeing pictures, the officer noted it was in much the same condition as the prior car.

In the last incident, again within a half-hour of the previous call, 11:09 a.m., a homeowner reported that someone threw jars of baby food against the house. As there was no significant damage to the property, the person did not want an official report written but wanted to ensure that police were aware of the problem.

As of Tuesday, there are no suspects, and other than the similar misuse of the baby food, no other connection between the victims or why they were targeted has yet been made.
