Lakewood softball, Newark Catholic baseball seeded No. 1

PICKERINGTON Lakewood softball and Newark Catholic each earned top seeds Sunday during the Central District tournament draws.

Lakewood, which lost its first game of the season this past Thursday to Licking Valley, is the No. 1 seed and in pursuit of its first Division II district title since 2011.

The Lancers could see Licking Valley for a rubber match or Bishop Hartley in the district finals if the seeds hold. Heath and Granville each could receive a rematch with Jonathan Alder, which eliminated both teams during its run to the state tournament in 2014.

In Division I, Newark hosts Upper Arlington at 5:30 p.m. May 11 to begin postseason play. In Division IV, NC hosts Worthington Christian or Madison Christian at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Green Wave were the top seed in Division IV in baseball. They will be seeking their 10th consecutive district title. Fisher Catholic or Danville could match with NC in a district final.

In Division I, Newark hosts Franklin Heights at 5 p.m. May 11 in the first round. Watkins Memorial, which lost its first two games this past week, earned the No. 3 seed and could host Pickerington Central in a second-round game May 13.

In Division III, Utica earned the No. 3 seed and could have meeting with perennial power Pleasant in a district final.
