Wildlife refuge plans controlled burn at Camp Perry

Staff report

ERIE TOWNSHIP – The Staff of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge will conduct a prescribed burn today or Wednesday on its property along Camp Perry Eastern and Balduf Roads, weather permitting.

This particular burn will help to control invasive species and improve conditions for the Eastern Prairie Fringed Orchid.

Ottawa NWR has historically treated between 100 and 800 acres annually with prescribed fire. A prescribed fire during this time period is especially productive for habitat management and brush control, refuge officials say.
