New restrictions for teen drivers start Wednesday

COLUMBUS – Ohio is broadening restrictions for teen drivers with probationary licenses, starting Wednesday.

Under the new rules, such drivers younger than 18 won't be allowed to drive with more than one non-family member in the vehicle during their first year behind the wheel. All of their passengers are required to wear safety belts.

The Office of Criminal Justice Services says those young motorists also won't be allowed to drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian or have an exemption for work, school or church.

The agency's director says the changes should help teens become safer drivers while they get more experience on the road.

Existing law also bans Ohioans under 18 from using cellphones while they are behind the wheel.
