NELLIE – An early-morning fire in a garage on Main Street sent a man to Coshocton County Memorial Hospital with second- or third-degree burns on his hands, a fire official reported.

Capt. Dave Stone of the Walhonding Valley Fire District said a mechanic was working on a car inside a garage at 133 Main St. in Nellie when fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

The garage, which was a pole barn, is a total loss, Stone said. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation by the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, he said.

Medics from Coshocton County Emergency Medical Services took the mechanic to the local hospital for treatment and possible transfer to an Akron hospital, Stone said. He declined to identify him.

Approximately 40 firefighters from the Walhonding Valley, Conesville, Three Rivers and Jackson Township departments helped control the fire within 90 minutes and extinguish it within three hours, Stone said.
