Davis-Shai House, Heath schools among ballot issues

ADVOCATE STAFF REPORT

May 5 primary voters faced a ballot filled with a number of tax issues to fund local schools, road improvements and the Davis-Shai House in Heath. There were also a number of uncontested races throughout the county.

Alicia White and Larry Morgan arrived at the Heath Baptist Church shortly after polls opened to cast their ballots in the May primary election.

Voters were asked to decide the fate of three school funding issues. Heath City Schools sought renewal of a 9.8-mill levy to fund operating expenses. If approved, the issue would continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $308 a year.

North Fork was also seeking a renewal of a 1 percent income tax that would generate $1.8 million in revenues for that district.

Southwest Licking Local Schools was seeking a renewal of a 7.8-mill emergency operating levy. If approved, the issue would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $238 a year.

In Heath, voters were to decide whether to continue funding the Davis-Shai House. A "yes" vote repeals a Heath City Council funding ordinance. A "no" vote is a vote to keep the funding established by that ordinance in place, resulting in $75,000 a year for three years being allocated to facility operations.

Also appearing on the ballot is 1.5 mill-continuing tax issue to fund road and bridge work throughout Etna Township.

In Perry Township, a five-year, 3-mill continuing tax would also fund maintenance of roads and bridges throughout that township.

Gloria Carson, director of the Licking County Board of Elections reported no issues Tuesdays. She said there 800 absentee ballots filed across the county.
