Death of two longtime residents shakes Rock

Laura Stinchcomb

When the quarry blasts daily at 1 p.m., anyone in Marblehead knows that it feels as if a bomb went off; we wonder whether the foundations of our homes are still intact at times.

Well, this past week in Lakeside, that is how many of our hearts felt, losing two unique individuals who left an incredible mark on many of our lives and always put a smiles on our faces.

Jane Tuthill passed away at 97. It doesn’t matter just how old you are; you more than likely ran into the Sun Flower lady on Walnut Street who dedicated her beautiful yellow and orange porch to the Lord’s ministry to share His love.

She loved hearing and sharing personal stories and had an ear for every generation. Everyone was passionate about Jane. Children would stop and talk to her regardless of whether they knew her, and she never let them leave with out offering candy.

Also, the wonderful and wise Joe Wise passed away suddenly last week. He had clock shops in Fremont and in Lakeside, which his wife, Cindy, runs — the downtown Lakeside district’s mother to all.

Their daughter, Mercedes, is the director of special education at the Port Clinton School District, and her husband, Dan, is the technology director at Danbury Local School District. Mercedes also is the proprietress of Miss Mercedes inside Lakeside.

His daughter, Emilia, owns a shop in downtown Marblehead called Embellished. You would see his grandchildren, Maddie and David Zain, were the apple of his eye.

Joe was one of a kind. I enjoyed watching how he fathered his adult children, and grandchildren. I liked to watch Joe and Cindy sit outside their shop in Lakeside sharing something to eat or engaging in one another.

He knew his clocks and watches like no one else. He would drive his antique dark-green convertible, and you would see the joy he had for life and the uniqueness he added to everyone he came into contact with.

He wasn’t your average bird. That’s what made him so special.
