Fishing takes center stage as summer draws to a close

PORT CLINTON – Another summer weekend has passed, meaning fall leaves and Old Man Winter are on the horizon in Port Clinton.

Before the last summer holiday and cool fall breeze pushed the summer heat away, Emmett Harris and Anita McCall, of Maple Heights, and friends dropped their fishing lines off the Waterworks Park docks to see whether they could catch one more large mouth bass before calling it a summer.

“We love Port Clinton. This is where you catch all the fish,” McCall said.

Harris said he and McCall come to Port Clinton all the time during the summer because of the beautiful atmosphere and the relaxation they can’t find in the bigger cities on Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio.

Port Clinton is a summer destination for people looking to have fun. Along with the great location, Harris said, the people of Port Clinton are always friendly and helpful when needing help finding the best sightseeing spots in the city.

“It is quiet and we enjoy the people. A lot of people just want to enjoy themselves,” McCall said.

McCall and Harris said they want to plan at least one more trip before the summer season ends, for next weekend to celebrate Labor Day.

Unfortunately for Harris, tourists and residents in the city, the summer is winding down, but there is still time to take advantage of seasonal shopping, ferries to neighboring islands and the chance to walk around a city filled with one-of-a-kind views and a peaceful atmosphere, which Harris said are too good to pass up.

“It’s not so rush-rush out here,” Harris said while reeling in a fish.

The day of fishing culminated when Harris, McCall and friends Nickie Roberson Toni Young saw Young’s daughter, Gabrielle, catch her very first fish.

Gabrielle was excited as Harris helped her reel in her first fish, which gave her the fight of her life. In the end, Gabrielle won out and posed with her catch.
