OAK HARBOR – On April 15, Roger Carpenter was honored as Ottawa County veteran of the year for 2014 at a celebration at the American Legion Post 114.

Roger is the fourth veteran in Ottawa County to receive the honor.

The Ottawa County Veterans Service Commission selected Roger after reviewing several nominations.

“Roger served our country with honor when our country needed him. Upon discharge, he continued to faithfully serve in the civilian sector. He has inspired, mentored and befriended many veterans, and I personally find his kindness and compassion an inspiration.” said Sara Toris, director of the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office.

Roger joined the U.S. Army in October 1951. He was honorably discharged in November 1952 after successfully attaining the rank of sergeant first class. After settling into the civilian sector, Roger joined the American Legion Post 114 and served as past commander, adjutant, finance officer, chaplain, and other positions.

Toris was the master of ceremonies, and Elizabeth Sutton, president of the county veterans service commission, presented Roger with a U.S. flag that flew above the veterans service office on the day of the ceremony. Gary Cagle, vice president of the county veterans service commission, presented Roger with a plaque.

American Legion Post 114 Commander Thomas DeCant, who nominated Roger, thanked the veteran for his service in the American Legion. The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners proclaimed April 15 as Roger E. Carpenter Day in the county.

Also attending was the 2013 Ottawa County veteran of the year, Paul Laderach.
