Galion sweeps Crawford County Meet

CRESTLINE – Galion coach Todd Roston said his teams don't usually concentrate on winning meets.

He made an exception on Friday night.

The Tigers' girls put up 205 points to win comfortable over second-place Colonel Crawford's 140, while the boys held off the Eagles, 180-157, to sweep the Crawford County Track Meet at Crestline High School.

"We usually don't load up to win tournaments (in the regular season)," Roston said. "This meet, we loaded up and tried to win."

The success of that effort is evident. Galion sewed up all four MVP awards. Freshman Marissa Gwinner and Gavin Ratcliff won for field events while Michaela Slone and Drake Barnett won for running events.

"We wanted to have high double placers," Roston said. "We did it. We had some kids step up."

The Tigers had 18 firsts in the combined 34 events. Colonel Crawford was not able to match that.

"We knew coming in that Galion was strong," Colonel Crawford boys coach Preston Foy said. "They are well-coached. But we had a lot of good things happen tonight, some PRs."

The Eagles combined for eight firsts to secure second place in both boys and girls.

"I'm happy," Colonel Crawford girls caoch Jody Grove said. "Galion did get all of the first place finishes."

"We think we have teams that can match up with any Division III schools in the state," Foy said. "We can make runs in the post-season."

Bucyrus boys were third with 78 points, Wynford was fourth with 71, Buckeye Central fifth with 31 and Crestline had eight.

Wynford girls were third with 70.5, Bucyrus was next with 63.5, Buckeye Central came in at 40 and Crestline finished with six.

The Royals' Ellie Richmond was a double winner, taking both the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run and Cole Fortner won the 100 meter dash.

Colonel Crawford's Callie Ruffener set the only new meet record with a vault of 10-07.00 in the girls' pole vault.

Bucyrus' Brittany Parsell won the 200 meter dash, while the boys won the 4 X 400 meter relay and Kaden Wilson won the pole vault at 10-03.00.

Bryce Brenneman got the lone first for Buckeye Central in the high jump with a 6-00.00 effort.
