Get your scoop at Earl's Dari

Jennifer L. Manfrin

COSHOCTON – Whether you like ice cream sundaes with traditional toppings or unique concoctions, Earl Bosson and his team has your scoops.

Earl's Dari Drive-In at 708 Otsego Ave. is serving sundaes with a personal touch and almost endless possibilities to fit every customer's cravings.

"This is kind of the summer hangout. People come in for lunch or dinner and like to top it off with sundaes," said Earl Bosson, who has owned the establishment with his wife, Becky, since 1992. Each year, Earl's is opened from March through October serving hand-dipped ice cream and soft serve, milkshakes, sandwiches and sides along with his signature sundaes.

The history of the drive-in goes back to 1953 when it was established by former owners Paul and Georgia Markley, said Bosson, who kept the concept and quality but doubled the ice cream capacity over the years.

"I think that it's our variety that keeps customers coming back for more. They can come in and get a basic sundae or something extra special," Bosson said.

Shelly Craigo of West Lafayette has been on the Earl's Dari Drive-In team for the past six seasons, and said the staff members go out of their way to make each sundae special and delicious.

"Everything is fresh and we all take pride in making the sundaes. We all want them to look just as good as they taste when we hand them to our customers.

The variety at Earl's is apparent in the huge selection of more than 20 hand-dipped ice cream flavors and numerous toppings on the menu that make the sundae creation as limitless as customers' imaginations.

And while favorites like hot fudge, caramel and strawberry are frequently requested, top sellers like the Eskimo kisses that features vanilla ice cream, truffles, coconut, hot fudge and almonds are as delicious as they are unique, Bosson said.

"It's like eating a frozen candy bar."

He said "you can't go wrong" with the hot fudge cake and peanut butter cup sundaes that are also customer favorites. For ice cream lovers who want a serious sundae, Bosson calls the old-fashioned banana split "the biggest, baddest sundae of all." It includes bananas with chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream, strawberry, pineapple, fudge and marshmallow topping, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry to top it off.

"Our customers call it the 3-day sundae," he said.

For those who can't decide from the menu of sundae possibilities, Bosson invites them to mix and match any of the ice cream varieties and toppings available. "Many people create their own sundaes. Customers will come in and ask, and we'll do it for them," he said.

Earl's Dari Drive-In is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. June through August.
