We are in summer mode now.

Memorial Day was wonderful, with ceremonies and festivities well-attended. As a parent with a child in active service, I appreciate the attention paid to military members.

Benefit set to aid Ivy Moss

This Saturday, there is a celebration to help a child and her family.

The Ivy: Strong And Courageous benefit is planned at Camp Sabroske, 4405 Toussaint North Road in Oak Harbor.

Ivy Moss is a student at R.C. Waters Elementary School. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with leukemia. She is close to receiving a bone marrow transplant in Cleveland. She will remain there for a minimum of 100 days. That is to ensure that everything is progressing as it should.

All of that is hopeful to very hopeful. It is the details that can be very challenging. Ivy’s family must move. Their current home burns wood for heat. They need to find a house with another type of heat. Also, she needs a room of her own that includes air conditioning.

Because of the care Ivy needed and the time involved, her mother, Erin Chio Moss, quit her job in February. She will remain with Ivy in Cleveland. Ivy’s dad, Calvin Moss, plans to travel back and forth to Cleveland. The Mosses also have three other children.

The benefit for Ivy is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. this Saturday. It is put together by members of Shoreline Church and the Oak Harbor community. The Mosses are members of the Shoreline Church home group led by Doug and Alicia Moyer.

The Moyers manage Camp Sabroske. They volunteered the camp. They are planning a carnival atmosphere with activities for families. Horseback and pony rides are available. Face painting and a photo booth will be offered.

Food includes a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. until it is sold out, a perch sandwich and chips from noon until it is sold out, a bake sale as well as snacks and a water table.

Other activities include a fishing derby only for children younger than 12. Register between 10 and 11 a.m. The derby is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon. Bring your own equipment. Cost is $10 per child.

A cornhole tournament begins at 11 a.m. and costs $20 for a two-person team. Call Mary Winters at 419-603-2660 for advance registration or sign up on Saturday.

T-shirts will be on sale, and a silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For those who wish to help, checks can be made payable to Ivy Strong and mailed to Camp Sabroske, 4405 Toussaint North, Oak Harbor, OH 43449.
