CLYDE – Two firefighters were unharmed after falling through an attic ceiling, while another officer was treated at a hospital for heat exhaustion after battling a house fire Sunday.

Chief Craig Davis estimated he damage at $90,000 after a fire started in the southeast corner of a home on the 140 block of Paula Drive. He said there were no injuries to the residents.

“Two (firefighters) were in the attic and with the weight on the rafters, the ceiling caved in,” he said. “They were checked on the scene by EMS and released on scene.”

Another firefighter, who was fighting the blaze from a lift bucket, was taken by Sandusky County EMS to Bellevue Hospital, from which he was released after being treated for heat exhaustion.

Davis, who lives next door to the house that caught fire, said he was returning home when he saw smoke in the rear of the home. He said his first thought was the smoke was coming from a cookout.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Davis said, but it may have been caused by discarded ashes. Once the building caught fire, winds blew flames through the ceiling into the attic, catching insulation on fire.

Davis said it took less than an hour to extinguish the flames in the one-story ranch home. He said the only damage to the home was in the roof and ceiling above the garage.

Assisting the Clyde fire department were the Green Springs Fire Department and Sandusky County Life Squads 14 and 15.
