S.W.A.T wrestlers earn fifth state title in six years

MANSFIELD – Mansfield S.W.A.T. youth wrestling repeated as state team champion, winning its fifth title in six years.

Jaiden Grose led the way, winning the 56-pound weight class in the 7-8 age group. Grose did not have a point scored on him in the entire tournament, pinning Jeremyah Gilbert of the Court House Cobras in the finals.

Grose's older brother, Angelo, won the 105-pound class for his second straight title, defending Joey Petrella of Bishop Hartley in the finals. Angelo Grose had three pins en route to his title.

S.W.A.T. produced two other state finalists in Carsten Branstetter (6-under, 40 pounds) and Bryce Gould (11-2, 90 pounds). Other state placers for S.W.A.T. were Jaden Harrelson (6-under, 55 pounds), fifth place; Tayveon Curry (6-under, 58 pounds), third place; Champ Delancy (7-8, 61 pounds), fourth place; Malakhi Brooks (9-10, 59 pounds), third place; and Cameron Brooks (9-10, 65 pounds), fifth place.

S.W.A.T. was fourth in the overall team standings, finishing behind all-star teams Palmer, Shore Sports and Golden Cross Academy. S.W.A.T.scored 180.5 points in its separate team division, with Elder Wrestling coming in second with 155 points and Foxfire Youth Wrestling rounded out the top three teams with 99 points.

"This was truly a team effort for us this year," coach Anthony Brooks said. "All of our kids did their part."
