Heagen, Howe continue to spark their college teams

With conference tournaments approaching, several former area standouts have propelled their teams down the stretch.

•Senior Jake Heagen has helped the University of Findlay win seven of its past eight games. The John Glenn product scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds in the Oilers’ 70-62 victory against Malone on Saturday, and poured in 24 points with a 6-of-9 effort from 3-point range in a 77-64 win against Walsh this past week.

•West Liberty University also has won seven of eight behind the play of junior point guard Kailee Howe. The former Zanesville standout posted a double-double (15 points and 14 assists) in a 93-86 win against Glenville State on Monday. She also scored 22 points with eight assists as the Hilltoppers dropped West Virginia Wesleyan, 86-79, this past week.

•Junior Rian Burrell had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists to help Walsh University drop Wayne State, 86-77, on Saturday. The Zanesville graduate continues to thrive off of the bench, averaging 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 25 games for the Cavaliers, who have won four of their past five contests.

•Zak Kirkbride, a sophomore at West Liberty, had seven points in a 92-70 win against West Virginia Wesleyan this past week. The Rosecrans alum is contributing 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds in 14 minutes per game for the Hilltoppers (24-2).

•Otterbein University junior Amariah Huck tallied 14 points and eight rebounds in a season-ending, 76-71 loss to Heidelberg on Saturday. The Tri-Valley graduate led the Cardinals with 14 points and 5.7 rebounds in 25 contests.

•University of Charleston sophomore Darian Apperson scored six points and grabbed four rebounds off of the bench in a 73-58 win against Urbana this past week. The Morgan product has 36 points and 43 rebounds in 16 contests for the Golden Eagles.

•Sophomore Jake Phillis was limited to six points as Otterbein ended the season with a 72-60 loss to Heidelberg on Saturday. The Zanesville alum finished with a team-high 11.2 ppg. and totaled 42 rebounds, 31 assists and 26 steals in 24 games.

•Marietta College freshman Amisha Herd scored six points to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals in Sunday’s 51-48 victory against Ohio Northern. The West Muskingum product totaled 12 points and seven rebounds as the Pioneers lost 47-45 to Wilmington on Monday in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. Herd contributed 6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.1 steals in 26 games.

•Muskingum University freshman Shelbi Van Meter capped the regular season with five points, four rebounds and two assists in a 71-56 loss to John Carroll on Sunday. The Crooksville product averaged 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 25 games.

•Mount Vernon Nazarene University junior Steph Imes, a West Muskingum graduate, started six of 27 games and finished the season averaging 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds.

•University of Indiana (Pa.) junior Amy Graham, from West Muskingum, has seen time in 15 games.She has scored 26 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Crimson Hawks (24-2).

•Ashland University freshman Leanne Ulbrich of Zanesville has tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 12 games for the Eagles (20-7).
